How Often Should I Clean My Drains?

Oct 26, 2018

It can be easy to forget to do something such as cleaning your bathroom sink drains on a regular basis. You wash your hands and notice that the water isn’t draining as quickly as it should and make a mental note to clean it. Once you walk out of the bathroom, that mental note falls to the bottom of your to-do list more often than it should.

There are a lot of things that end up in our drains; for instance, food particles, hair and soap will add up. As such items build up over time; they will clump together and create a clog. If left unmaintained, this can create a serious plumbing problem that could be easily avoided with regular care. Having that said, conducting a drain cleaning on a regular basis can save you a lot of unneeded frustration down the road.

Frequency of Cleanings

Upon a quick internet search to find out how often you should be cleaning your drains, you will get many different answers. Some people say weekly, bi-monthly or quarterly. However, we feel that cleaning your drains monthly should be sufficient to avoid major plumbing issues. A monthly cleaning will allow you to use safe cleaning methods which will save you time, energy and money in the long term.

How to Clean

Combine 1 cup of vinegar, 1 cup of very hot water, and 1 half cup of baking soda and pour the mixture down the drain. Cover the sink with the drain plug and allow it to sit for 5 to 10 minutes then flush the drain with 1 additional cup of hot water. The baking soda and vinegar drain mixture will loosen up anything that is causing blockages in the drain and the chemical reaction of the two will jolt the debris loose and allow it to wash down the drain with the final rinse.
